The Amateur Traveler talks to Lash from LashWorldTour.com about the Island of Java in the nation of Indonesia.
She cycled through the countryside and visited the major cities of this populous island in Indonesia.
“Java is a very very interesting place, quite different from any western country. It’s predominantly Muslim. It’s in the tropics, almost on the equator. It’s mountainous. There are a lot of volcanos. One main reason to go to Java would be for culture. There is a lot of interesting culture there like the Gamelan music which is similar to Bali’s Gamelan music but a little more sedate. There are other arts there like batik fabrics. It was the seat of several Javanese empires so there are remnants of that in some of the cities.
Nature would be the other reason to go to Java. Java is just a really beautiful island of rice fields, a lot of mountains and volcanos. Probably the most famous volcanos are mount Bromo and Merapi. And then Krakatoa is just to the west of Java. I did a lot of mountain hiking and volcano hiking when I went there.”

Hey there Chris,
Been listening to your podcast for about a year or so now and I have listened to almost every episode, so I figured now might as well be the time to finally send you an email about just how awesome your show is. The Amateur Traveler is by far my favorite travel podcast. You and your guests manage to consistently deliver captivating anecdotes, stories, history, and culture in an informative, yet entertaining way. I can’t tell you how much of a relief it has been for me to be able to listen to your show at work, as I may have one of the least stimulating jobs in existence. Yet, every Monday morning I look forward to booting up iTunes to see what new photo pops up, to discover some place new, or to rediscover some place known. I’ve always been interested in travel, but I credit your show with really ramping up that travel “bug” to near mania.In fact, thanks in part to the constant reminder of awaiting adventure that your podcast has been, my girlfriend and I have decided to take advantage of the working holiday visa and spend a year in New Zealand. We leave next April! We can’t wait!
Anyways, keep up the great work. You have been an inspiration to me, and I look forward to what’s in store for the future.

Nice podcast on java. Hopefully in the distant future me and my wife will be semi close to there. We are both planning to go to Singapore and she is taking a side trip to Bali to relax and I plan to take a side trip to Kula Lumper to see another bustling city. Question did you upload the regular podcast instead of the itunes enhanced since I only saw only picture. I really did appreciate the guest tips on customs in the area I will try to remember them especially the point with the thumb. And finally don’t think I am going to let off easy when you took you shot at the DC weather. Went to a baseball game in July in San Fran and had to buy an overpriced sweater because I was freezing. Not sure which is worse. Keep up the good work Darrell

This is relative to the Java podcast.
I wonder why person who feels this way about indonecia bothers to comment about it 10 years after being there. The description of the capital of Indonesia as “dirty, filthy, rundown, crowded… Just blah” place is a new one for the record.
Her attitude exmplified in her statement about wearing whatever she likes (such as shorts and short skirts), regardless of the culture of the country she is visiting is probably the basis for the term “ugly American.” let’s hope the listeners know better than acting this way.

I’m an independent traveler too, but Borobudur has next-to-no information (let alone in English). I would’ve gotten more out of my visit with a guide (probably one reason they don’t provide much information – to provide employment). It might also be worth noting that foreigners pay ten times as much as Indonesians to visit Borobudur (the overcharging for Prambanan is somewhat less)
I was in Jakarta last year and “dirty, filthy, rundown, crowded” is a very accurate description.

Good post chris, thanks for give a positive comment for Java Island. As an Indonesian girl, I’m proud of my country. Java is a beautiful place to see after the beauty of volcanoes, we should have an amazing underwater view, such as Karimun Jawa. Besides Java, we have many Islands waiting for you all to explore, such Sumatra, Borneo, Sulawesi, and Irian Jaya. The Best Place in Indonesia is Raja Ampat Island, Papua, Irian Jaya. Recommended for you guys!
